The Department was established in the year 1952. Under the able Guidance of Prof K. Venkataramappa, the department had noted poets and laurates such as late Prof. H. M. Shankaranarayana Rao, Prof H. K. Lakkappa Gowda (Former V C of Hampi University), Late Prof. K. Shivarama Aithal (poet Critic), Prof A. V. Suryanarayana Swamy (well known orator). Now the department is headed by Prof. M. Nataraj.
